Ingredients

For the filling

  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef or pork
  • 2 cups sauerkraut, drained and squeezed dry
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the dough

  • 1 package frozen bread dough, thawed (approx. 1 pound or 450g)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to the temperature specified on the bread dough package.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, sauerkraut, chopped onion, minced garlic, caraway seeds (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix properly so all the ingredients meld together well.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed bread dough into a rectangle or circle, about 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) thick.
  • Cut the rolled-out dough into smaller squares or circles, depending on your preferred size for the Krautburgers.
  • Spoon a generous amount of the meat and sauerkraut filling onto one-half of each dough square or circle, leaving a small border around the edges.
  • Fold the other half of the dough over the filling, creating a pocket. Press the edges firmly together to seal the Krautburger.
  • Place the assembled Krautburgers on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • If desired, lightly brush the tops of the Krautburgers with beaten egg or melted butter to enhance the browning and flavor.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for the time indicated on the bread dough package or until the Krautburgers are golden brown and cooked through.
  • Once baked, remove the Krautburgers from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
