Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices of rye bread
  • 4 slices of American cheese
  • 4 tablespoons butter

Instructions

Prepare the Beef Patties

  • Start by dividing the ground beef into two equal portions and shaping them into oval-shaped patties, slightly larger than your slices of bread.
  • Season both sides of the patties with a pinch of salt and pepper.

Caramelize the Onions

  • Heat a skillet over medium-low heat and add 2 tablespoons of butter.
  • Once the butter has melted and is bubbling, add the thinly sliced onions to the skillet.
  • Cook the onions slowly, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and golden brown. This should take about 10-15 minutes.
  • Remove the caramelized onions from the skillet and set them aside.

Cook the Beef Patties

  • In the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high and add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter.
